“Bweep bwoop.”

Let's do this quick, I have another, longer post that's going to get me in more trouble, but I need to link to this one in that one, so I need to get this one out first.

The Light Side of the Force isn't about Good and the Dark Side of the Force isn't about Bad. I know the Dark Side is all bad guys who look scary and wear black and the Light Side is all good guys who look dumb and wear white, and if you had to sum up how the thing practically works in the whole of Star Wars, Dark Bad Light Good is accurate to about 99% of the situations, I can recongnize the limitations here, but my friends, it's not about that.

Wrong axis of the alignment chart; the Force is about balance and chaos. The Light Side is the system balanced, in order-- the dark side is imbalanced, the thing off-kilter.

It's why the idea of "balance" can't actually exist between Dark and Light-- you can't be balanced and imbalanced at the same time. It's why the Jedi can and do evil all the time; and why the Dark Side can be so sympathetic-- Good and Evil run between their axis freely. The Dark Side is naturally more conductive towards the goods of emotion and connection than the Light, even.

So then what does bringing balance to the Force mean? I DON'T KNOW. I don't think George fucking Lucas knows either, I think that's some terrific hippie bullshit that sound very portentious, but I don't think there's ever been a way in the fiction that it's actually worked out in a manner that's satisfying on a logical or emotional level either in-universe or to viewers.

In all earnestness I think if I had the thing, Balance would be the shifting of the seasons, the thing in flux, the tides coming in and out, change and plateau, the way of life, but I'm not Pablo Hidalgo, I don't get to write these things in a spreadsheet for Jon Favreau to ignore, so what does it matter. I'm just a little round orb that's good for merchandise. Bweep bwoop.
