bcj, can't you take a break from work to tell us what you've been reading?

Yeah, sure

I didn't do much reading this week. I've been busy with work and I used most of my spare time relaxing and playing video games. Don't worry though, I spent the tail end of my long weekend reading so I'd have stuff to talk about.

Just Finished

Delicious in Dungeon World Guide — Ryoko Kui

I'm not usually big on these side things but this was nice enough. I wanted to see some art and some bonus comics and I did. This series is good. You should check it out

Clouds of Witness — Dorothy Sayers

On @JhoiraArtificer's (and I believe @dog's too) recommendation, I finally checked out a Lord Peter Wimsey mystery. I definitely new Sayers name but didn't really know much about her writing.

I always assumed the fictional detective, St. John Lord Merridew, that the Olivier character writes in Sleuth was based on Lord Peter Wimsey but I just looked it up and that's not true so I apparently knew nothing of Wimsey.

I thought this was alright and I'll read some more at some point. I think the mystery was complicated in a fun way and I enjoy the dynamic between Wimsey and Detective Parker.

There was one thing that I really didn't enjoy (not the buffoonish British communists. that was whatever), and that is the heavy use of writing in accents. At the best of times I find that stuff ineffective in characterization and often it's just racist. In this specific case, I wasn't always familiar with the accents in question and I found parts of it basically unreadable.

Now Reading

Around the World in 80 Days — Jules Verne

Wow, I'm in Singapore in the race and Fogg is in the book too. Perfect timing

Stone Diaries — Carol Shields

It's my turn to pick for book club so I'm getting folks to read some Carol Shields. I haven't actually started this because I only just finished the Sayers. I'll read this on the walk home from the coffee shop

The Unemployed People's Movement — James J. Lorence

I think I'm only a chapter further in than last week. Nothing new to report
