how much every site that doesn't allow me to use italics or footnotes1 is attacking me, personally. The other styling is nice but sites not letting you emphasize text is bullshit
allow us to use the symbols for footnotes staff. I know this is the high-priority issue
whenever I comment on YouTube and my asterisks bold my text I cry a little
I'll admit, I still think mentally that underscores is italics and asterisks is bold so here/other markdown I write _italic_ **bold** but clearly I've lost the battle on that one
seems legit to me, markdown is nice in that it relies on quantity not characters for that
also it occurred to me to look up the spec, turns out one of each is translated to an em tag and two of each to a strong tag, which by default translates to italic and bold but don't necessarily have to.
so if I use underscore on YT is that gonna italicize? I never bothered figuring out what the actual system was there lol
I'm guessing underscores vs. asterisks was the format option on either a forum or chat client growing up and that's where I learned it. I know underline is italic in copy-editing and I've always assumed that's where I picked it up but bold in copy-editing is a wavy underline not asterisks so I think I'm wrong
