What's the longest chain of movies you could watch where each movie was shown as footage in the previous movie?

What's the best chain of movies you could watch?

this is interesting, because it is self-limiting: one can only move backwards through movie history this way so eventually you'll run out of movies to chain up. to get the longest chain you'd have to look for movies that included footage from recent movies. a big jump ends the chain early. like, GoodFellas includes footage from The Jazz Singer and you can't jump back further from there.

I don't know one off hand but there must be two movies that use each other's footage as footage. Someone has had fun with a double feature.

in reply to @bcj's post:

If we count intra-series examples, a short one would be “The Matrix: Resurrections”, which shows footage from “The Matrix” (and I think some of the other sequels).

I do think chains of unrelated* movies would be both more difficult and more interesting, though.

*or, at least, not all related to each other

Wes Craven's New Nightmare uses footage from A Nightmare on Elm Street which has a TV showing The Evil Dead which has a poster for The Hills Have Eyes which has a poster for Jaws which uses the Wilhelm scream from Distant Drums

okay, a poster or sound effect isn't "footage" but
