in reply to @bcj's post:

the close-up one is with a 600mm-equivelent1 telephoto lens and the second is a long (1.3 second) exposure with the 300mm equivalent I take most of my photos with. The moon is absurdly bright out tonight and that helped a bunch

  1. micro 4/3 is a wild format for zoom lenses because the sensor is so small

it looks like the sky would have been pretty pristine for this photo, yeah!
had to do some googling to understand these terms, but i see it now.

i would guess that for the telephoto lens, you'd have that stored and taken out for specific occasions like these.
but do you always keep a camera on you in case you pass by something that'd make for a good photo?
or do you just dedicate some time every day to go out and shoot some photos?

It's a bit of both. I originally got the size/format of camera I own because it would be easier to throw in a bag (less so now that I usually have a big lens on it), so a lot of photos would just come out of me seeing something interesting while on a run or heading somewhere.

Since I've been trying to take an at-least-passable photo every day this year, and because I work at home, I have been taking a lot of walks this year with the explicit purpose of finding a photo.

I'll probably try to keep the daily walk next year, and I'll take my camera with me most days, but won't be sharing as many photos because some days I'm sure not motivated and it feels too much like work. So it's possible things will shift more to just things I see vs. intentional journeys
