If there is some country music playing ambiently in a location it can really set either a peaceful or an ominous mood. I don't think country rock works nearly so well for this.

It's a calm, quiet night. It's dark out and comfortably chilly so there aren't people out and about but the sidewalks are lit by the streetlights reflecting off the fresh snow and a lot of houses have Christmas lights on. I was walking down the quiet street to my house and I walked by a parked van that was playing some music just loudly enough to hear as I pass. A nice little moment

I just mean classic country is more likely to be melancholic. reflecting on this

Trying to think about how I would split country vs. country rock and it might just be "has an electric guitar" so yeah, I'd put this into country rock (even more so as while I was typing that a guitar solo started).

I think I agree, most country rock that doesn't belong to one of the horror subgenres is like... fundamentally triumphant? or at least is trying to get you into the mood to be triumphant

Yeah, I think based on my (admittedly weak) understanding of country rock stuff, I feel like it has too much energy to be ambient. There's almost some down-tempo stuff that I just don't know that would work
