I don't tend to read much beyond the occasional Agatha Christie even though I like the genre. Who is alive and writing that I should be checking out

idk what the boundaries of the genre are w/r/t more crime/thriller stuff, but i've been reading through the martin beck series and it still whips 50 years later
if you like Holmeslikes, Laurie R. King is good. Dorothy L. Sayers is definitely dead but really good, I prefer her to Christie
Oh, I recognize these names. I don't think I knew Dorothy Sayers was a mystery writer but I also don't really know what I think she writes. Putting both of them on my to-read list
My suspicion is that if you like Christie you'll like Sayers even more!
Her novels aren't as standalone as Christie, I'd really recommend reading in publication order. :)
me showing up to the book club with visual novels: ryukishi07 (when the cry series, especially umineko) and takumi shu (ace attorney series, especially the great ace attorney chronicles) if you haven’t read either and enjoy VNs
Hmm, I don't really play any VNs but what if I did. Good call. I'm the jerk who's seen the umineko art and just doesn't think they can deal with it even though everyone raves about that game. Maybe I'll start with ace attorney instead since I've always meant to check them out
Yeah, so, Umineko has the original Ryukishi07 art which is that - I like and appreciate that art a bunch, but def prefer the PS3 release sprites which are super pro-quality. There are several patches available to add those super nice assets to the Steam version and use them, I would recommend that for sure.
(You'll see on Steam that the releases of Umineko and Higurashi by MangaGamer both use a third set of sprites done by them which are ... absolutely awful imo. but that's why you get the patch/mod :) )
Also, yeah, AA is generally fantastic all the way through. The only notable drops in quality in there are the 5th game "Dual Destinies" and a particular case in the 2nd game that's just a bit wacky. Great Ace Attorney is its own continuity and doesn't need any prior knowledge, but it's also so deft that yknow, it's a bit more satisfying of a meal after you've see a bit of the series' growth before it.
Dorothy Sayers is one of the all time greats. Start with Murder Must Advertise or Gaudy Night.
Edit: Oh, you said “alive”… sorry!
In terms of living authors, China Miéville only wrote one mystery novel but it’s a doozy - The City and the City is one of my favourite books. Don’t look up the plot ahead of time.
I really like Ruth Ware. The Girl in Cabin 10 is probably my fave of hers
The Dublin Murder Squad series by Tana French is a great set of works: 5 different books, each with a different POV char and voice. I think the 2nd (The Likeness) is the most unique, but all of them are worth a read IMO.
bunch of cool suggestions here, i have bookmarked this post and named it "murder". Anyway i don't have any suggestions that are alive, except for seconding the suggestion of Ace Attorney. its a great series. I have played all 11 games.
