It's kinda weird for me to talk about something like this, not because it's My Little Pony (not a dedicated fan or anything but it's kind of neat), but because it's fanfiction, which is something I haven't read any of for at least 15 years. (Basically all of my reading is nonfiction nowadays.) This story was a recommendation from a friend of mine who knew I would require very little understanding of pony lore in order to successfully parse and enjoy the story.
And, well. I did. It was pretty great! It's a "character is transplanted from their familiar world to a different one" story, or an "Isekai" if you prefer that term, which is the root of the reason I think it works well for non-MLP fans to enjoy (and why I am forwarding on the recommendation to others). The strongest part of the story is the interactions and character development going on between the three main characters. That's precisely the kind of story I want to write, eventually, and I learned some pretty good lessons about the "Do's" for trying to write that. Also some "Don'ts" about what kind of plot elements to excise, which I will be intentionally vague about because I don't want to prime anyone else's opinions to be in line with my own should they decide to read this fanfic themselves.
