This train of thought turned my hyper-Christian mom to the path of atheism. When I was in my early teens she started to (correctly) suspect I was gay, which meant eternal damnation. If God, who is capable of deeper love than humans can fathom, can bear torturing his creations for ever, why couldn't she as a simple human bear the mere thought of hurting our pet dog as punishment? It didn't compute so I'm proud to say I was a queer enough child with loving enough parents that we stopped going to church. I'm sure one could try to invalidate this thought process with like "we can't try to fathom Gods judgement bc humans can't comprehend what God can" but that's basically the evangelical way of saying "because I said so."

Yeah.

The common explanations I've seen for this general category of problem have all been incredibly underwhelming, in the sense that they seem to just treat God as, For Some Reason, having about as much imagination as a particularly boring human.
