A cool bear havin' a chill day

hi

Damn. You ever like something morally neutral at worst on your own time, be completely disconnected from Fandoms in general, then stumble across the youtube sphere of it all and find out the fanbase seems to be majority chuds and fash-leaning conservatives screaming the most ironic shit in a completely serious manner?

It's The Elder Scrolls, particularly Morrowind. Morrowind, one of the most politically themed games of all time that has you doing Actual Literal Politics as like, 70 percent of the main quest, has fans who scream that politics shouldn't be in games the moment they see someone who isn't Male Presenting and has a darker "Realistic" skin tone than a glass of milk.

This could just be a poor representation of the fanbase after watching Patrician TV's 12 hour "Quick retrospective" shoved me into the conservative Elder Scrolls fan pipeline on Youtube, though. Anyone know any Elder Scrolls content creators that aren't... Gestures vaguely Like That?

in reply to @bearington's post:

i've seen both this and ironically on the other end of the spectrum people getting really, REALLY mad at mk's insane lore and it's so funny. it will never not be funny.

morrowind was like my #1 formative experience growing up and i stay the fuck away from the fandom honestly it's just.... Anyone who tries to compare real world politics with morrowind of all things, a fantasy game with a heavily world built narrative that has its own extremely context-specific politics... I. Man. Just enjoy it for what it is. Which is a bizarro 1960/70s-ish fantasy with genderqueer godheads and where everyone is racist and wants to kill each other. Everyone in morrowind is problematic and they don't think about you at all.

I kind of suspect it's going to only get worse when skywind launches and like. I both really want newer generations to experience morrowind but i also don't look forward to people taking it out of its own context like they do with everything else. augh.

Yeah, honestly I'm consistently impressed to this day how little Morrowind maps to real world politics.

I can't really comment on what I think of Skywind beyond "I don't think it'll work because of the inherent differences in Dialogue Presentation".

They keep saying they'll have more unique voice actors, but that'll seriously increase the amount of "Little Advice" and "rumors", etc etc they're recording in 30 different voices, when I think anyone would understand them having a voice cast smaller than Bethesda did because Free Mod.

Despite being a mod Skywind's dev team is like the most professionally organized dev team I've ever seen -- they are legit recording all of those voices and a lot of people have volunteered. I think at this point Skywind has become something of a game dev charity project aka people in the industry contributing small things to it in their spare time. It's been really neat to see the models and voice work and everything else coming out of there with such insane levels of polish.

That being said, I also wonder how well such a text heavy game will convert to voice acted? I guess we'll see

Y'know, people getting mad at MK's lore also reminds me of this one dude I watched ages ago on Youtube without him ever mentioning his actual politics in the videos I watched, going on wild "What (ES Game) but lore accurate would be like, given unlimited budget and development time" style videos.

Usually included long, drawn out rants about the Elder Scrolls lore policy of there being no real canon and how that sucked and how that let people write fanfic and pretend it was canon

Then I went to his video about recommended channels for ES lore and he always appended the reccomendation with shit like "Very PC master race, very anti social justice, like a man should be." and I lost my shit laughing and never watched him again. Can't remember his name.

Shame the biggest elder scrolls videos on youtube right now are by a guy who makes him look like the patron saint communisto the 9th, though.

LOOOOOOOL oh my god. I think I just haven't watch a lot of random elder scrolls shit on youtube because I figure its gonna be some dweeb giving his opinion that the elder scrolls isn't enough like the John Norman GOR series or someone who came to morrowind from a skyrim angle and are way too gamer about it.

I think, on youtube specifically, the part of the fandom that actually gets it and are tolerable to watch are the people who make videos like these

Patrician TV's original Morrowind video was pretty good actually if you like 12 hour "uick retrospectives"

The Oblivion video was at least partially intellectually honest about the development problems the game faced.

Then the Skyrim video is 20 hours of how not to critique a game. Just constant "I WOULD DESIGN IT THIS WAY!" and a weird undertone of disdain for modders "Fixing" the game despite Patrician TV still being an active Morrowind modder. Not to mention all the Jontron and Tucker Carlson reaction memes.

I do love Morrowind meme videos though. Way I look at the series right now is that Skyrim is a modding platform for a fun little fantasy adventure to lose myself in for a week or two if I'm feelin' bad, Oblivion is an interesting history piece, and Morrowind... well, I only need OpwnMW to dive into my favorite PC RPG.
