Back in the pre-monopolized era web development was an absolute fucking mess where SEO consisted of a set of more or less superstitious rituals to separately cater to what was known about Altavista and Lycos and I can barely even remember what else, all of which weighted results by different metrics that changed constantly and none of which were terribly rewarding compared to just joining a really popular webring or getting spread by word of mouth. Beyond a pretty low bar trying to expand your audience by appealing to peoples' equipment rather than the people themselves rapidly became a colossal waste of time and money, you were better off just getting someone really excited about your website.

Now there's one search engine that matters, Google, who's stopped even changing their algorithm around meaningfully; and there's one browser kernel that matters, also by Google, and even if only one in a million visitors to your site doesn't immediately throw up and click away that's still more conversions/sales/suckers than you'll get from anything but reaching the top of a common Google search ranking, so if you want to make money or be seen the only thing that really matters is catering to Google's priorities. Google delenda est.
