For this prompt I decided to try and paint the center panel of a Roman 3rd c. CE sarcophagus. It depicts Mercury (Hermes) peeking out from behind a doorway beneath a temple-like structure. Mercury is a psychopomp (literally a soul-guide), and in this capacity his job is to lead the recently deceased to the underworld. Instead of just painting it in grays, I decided to add my own touches of colour to evoke the polychromy we see all throughout the ancient world.
