ADHD is when 75% of your brain knows that

  • you need to work on this project because people are expecting it to be done soon
  • you're competent and capable
  • you have literally nothing else planned today
  • you have minimal distractions
  • you have a comfortable work environment
  • you had plenty of sleep last night
  • you have taken your medication and it should be in full effect by now
  • you have the time to work on it now, but if you delay, you'll just have to crunch on it later

and unfortunately, the other 25% of your brain is the part that's actually involved in executive function and task initiation, and the only thing it wants to do is scroll through social media endlessly, or go play video games, or go nap

it's just fucking miserable and leads to lots of self-loathing because god dammit I know that I need to do the work, and I'm capable of doing so, and I have basically perfect conditions to get tons of work done, but my fucking brain won't let me

It's one of the reasons I stopped using Twitter (not that there's any shortage of those). While I loved the stuff I found on there, I realized that the constant scrolling to find the next cool-thing™ played havoc on my dopamine-bankrupt brain (and made me anxious to boot).

And suddenly... oh, hey. I want to spend some time reading, or working on some interesting side project. I mean, there's still bad days, but I feel I get a lot more good days out of it.

Seems that dopamine-fueled social media is great for hooking people, but it's especially bad for those with ADHD. And that's Twitter—I shudder to think how horrible tiktok must be.
