Caroline had a pretty robust education which taught her many things about arts, sciences, and even combat. Her gun is a magical focus - which all students of her school are supposed to build their own

but she also plays the piano! It was actually her mother who taught her.

I wonder what people think when see pictures of Caroline with wings and others without. It's obviously something I can only answer when the actual game is out, but I'm curious if anyone is, well, curious.

I partook on a meme on another social media site where the prompt was to get people to assume things about a given character. I chose Caroline as a subject. So here's a compilation of everyone's assumptions and my answers:

  1. DoricDream: listens to camel (link)
she is a woman of taste so yes (also i'll be listening to this now, thank you)

  2. GamerTower: She once tried the "Cute Kawaii Anime Girl" asthetic but gave up when she realized it was too hard
nah. it's how her mom dressed her up as a kid, so she doesn't like the association. she has no qualms with taking forever to get dressed up Caroline, age 9she probably had a goth/emo phase in high school though

More after the cut

Pixel art of BELOW HEAVEN's protagonist, Caroline - old version on the right, new version on the left.

Revamped Caroline's sprite to be more accurate to her current design. I wanted to avoid falling into a cycle of remaking assets but I felt this was necessary - and it's also which is why i decided to be conservative with it and keep it within the style of the other sprites (else i'd have to revamp everyone!).

Caroline was the first sprite I made for this game as I started adding more characters I started using more colors/detail, so in a way her sprite ended up looking too plain by comparison. I limit the number of colors whenever I can but I'm not going for a hard limit on palettes or anything like that - even so, after the revamp this Caroline sprite still only uses 13 colors (including colors not shown here used by her gun and whatnot) so it's still viably "16-bit". No other sprite on the game goes over the 15-color count so far, but some of the portraits do. (I'm imagining if this were a console game of some kind it'd probably be on the Saturn or Playstation, where sprites could have been 256 colors anyway)
