Heading Out is a game developed by Serious Sim and published by Saber Interactive. Saber also published Mudrunners, but Serious Sim is a somewhat new studio without much of a backcatalog to prove their quality on the gaming market.
From my experience playing Heading Out, the sheer artistry of this team is fucking magical.
This isn't just a desperate breath of fresh air in the increasingly stale racing genre, though: it's genuinely a very exciting and interesting attempt at creating a racing game roguelite, and it is an absolute blast.
I'm not gonna say a damn thing about this game except offering a few tips:
- If you want more narrative gameplay and less driving gameplay, take the shortest path to the goal and avoid police attention. If you want way more driving, try accepting a mission that takes you away from the goal and putting your foot to the floor, running from the cops and racing against the street racers as much as you can.
- Buy the soundtrack bundle, because the music is all bangers no skips
- Keep reminding yourself that this game's setting is around the Vietnam War, and the developers are Polish; the political commentary in the game is rather blunt to the point of near-parody, but the narrative of the game feels very self-aware; nobody's perfect in this game.
