issuing a pre-emptive correction - you do not, under any circumstances, "gotta hand it to them" (them being philosophers, etc). But every so often I come across a footnote that's something like "an early critic asked whether ideas were material or immaterial... Locke publishes no response, but leaves behind drafts of replies in which he refuses to engage the question." and, you know. I kind of want to hand it to him.
