so today youtube recommended me a "zero punctuation" review of the video game Pentiment, and, despite not having watched "zero punctuation" (or, really, even remembering that it existed) since the George W Bush administration, I gave it a click.

Pentiment sounds like a very interesting game. It's set in renaissance-ish germany, it is a detective/choose your own adventure murder mystery type thing. Point and click! Something that I could even play! Unfortunately this review [SPOILER ALERT] stated that your choices don't really affect the game much.

That's too bad! Maybe I'll play it anyway. Also this kind of reminded me of the video game Suzerain, a point and click type game where you are the ruler of a post-dictatorial European-ish country and have to make, you know, political-economic policy decisions. So, obviously, I was great at it, and Sozialemarktwirtschaft-ed that ish to the best ending. But now I am kind of worried that it didn't matter what I chose, it would have still given me the best ending anyway. Oof.

pentiment is one of my favorites of the past year and I heartily recommend it. I don't think that review's take about the choices is especially accurate. the game is very down-to-earth about your capacity for individual action. you can't change the fate of the world, but you might make a very big difference to a single person.

Suzerain is terrific and I absolutely did not get the best ending either time that I finished it. I died ignomably and in obscurity. in different ways!
