you won't get metrics here for many reasons but the simplest advantage is that you can follow anyone you want forever. you can follow 10000 people and have 1 follower yourself and no one will ever know or care. you're free

there is no algorithm. this site shows you the posts in chronological order. so you have to actively find the things you want to see sometimes! use tags liberally and often, both to find and to boost things.

you can bookmark tags and effectively create an alternate 'home feed' for you made up of global posts with all your bookmarked tags in them. it's great and you should use it for discoverability.

if you click on 'following' in the left-hand sidebar you can see an "rss style" view of your home feed, where recent posters are put at the top, but it's also much easier to see a post from a Rare Account that only posts every week or so.
