A lot of people play a fan translation of the SNES version but tbh the DS version is super great and well worth being your first if it's a console you enjoy!
The DS version is just better. And for me, I can enjoy it with one of the best spanish translations ever. And I think it has a additional marriage option.
Fan Translations of the SNES or PS2 versions have a certain gravity about them that is lost with the lighthearted lingo of the DS & Mobile remakes. That said if you have the option I highly recommend getting the game on Mobile. They came out with a new item in '19 that doubles the catch rate for monsters at the first casino.
