I was just kinda vaguely anxious about comp ling classes not really making any difference in my career. I heard that you worked at the ol google doing linguistic stuff but that it sucked. I’ve also heard tales of other folks from the research and ling side of the fence having a bad time. Part of being at google was like “maybe I can shift my career toward like linguistic computer research and have a slightly better shot by transferring internally?” But in the past few years things seem to suck shit, and I was gathering data points to figure out how bad it would suck to stick around versus the vague chance of being able to use it for career momentum once I’m graduated or whatev. What was your experience like as a linguist in the tech industry?
