ideally one that doesn't take up a ton of space but is large enough to have a few octaves of keys that are each a reasonable human finger width

the asm hydrasynth is a really cool digital synth, the explorer model has 3 octaves and a very nice keyboard with MPE support for under a grand usd
the korg modwave is around the same price, very weird, hybrid digital with analog filters, velocity and aftertouch, no MPE internally
the modal cobalt5s has velocity and aftertouch, but i do not know as much about its digital synth engine as the asm, its a bit cheaper usually
for controllers the arturia keystep is used by everyone, velocity and aftertouch, sequencer, plus MIDI and monophonic CV out, and less than half the price any of the above synths
just depends what you are going for
hope that helps
i just watched nick batt's review of the cobalt5s, it sounds really good, it is much simpler than the others
red means recording has a video on the cobalt 8m, its sister synth (as well as several on the asm)
loopop has in depth tutorial videos for the asm and modwave
