Readers of a certain age may recall the Googlewhack: two words that you could type into a search engine and get zero results. No spam, no "corrected spelling," no lists of arbitrary dictionary words -- nothing. "comparative unicycle," now has about 48,300 results1 -- and because it's archetypical, the first couple results are still related to Googlewhacks, and only later come the Comparison of Current Electric Unicycles and the Unicyclist Stickers for Sale and the clickbaitish study called "Sex, aggression, and humour: responses to unicycling."

Like many relics of the not-objectively-all-that-old Internet, the Googlewhack seems impossibly quaint today. The closest we have anymore are quoted strings, which may come up empty, but may just inform you that a joke you were about to make has not only been made before, but by people who aren't even funny.

But not always. This is a longwinded post to say that, before today, there were somehow no search results for the string "twee Patrick Bateman."

  1. most of which will probably be throttled or filtered away from you, if indeed they exist
