I contest this happens because there's an ageist undercurrent in their culture and if you're smart and young you want to dodge it / look "mature"
yeah i think they have a super narrow idea of what a smart/respectable person looks line and to find out what it is, just look at fox news anchors. old white men and pretty blondes in a specific kind of dress
that reminds me of my sister with a ton of tats who used to work for disney. the main downside of them was when she visited japan and they wouldn't let her into the onsen because japan is weird about tattoos and associates them with the yakuza
