wonders how big is a firkin

ok so.

A US Firkin is 9 gallons, while a UK firkin is 56 pounds.

Oh... kay.

And the UK has a separate firkin for beer, which is also 9 gallons like the US firkins, but they're different gallons. So despite both firkins being 9 gallons, 1 UK Beer Firkin = 1.2 US Firkins.

And UK has a third firkin for wine. It's 70 gallons, which is relatively prime with 9 so where did they even get this from.

So to bring this around, it is extremely possible to ruin a recipe by replacing the units with Firkins. Because ambiguity of which firkin could cause the measurements to be off by more than an order of magnitude.
