if ur like "i like this show and this show and this show" i get it, but when someone just says they like anime as a blanket statement i tend to take that as meaning that they like the tropes and archetypes associated with anime, which in my experience tend to be extremely present in a lot of anime that's just really mediocre and that regurgitates existing anime premises and character types but with minor twists, and that' probably also has an embarrassing amount of weird horny fanservice

90% of anything is not good. 90% of science fiction shows are not good. 90% of visual novels are not good. You could find a lot of problematic trope in all of those (hell, I know for a fact you can find them), but if someone says "I love science fiction shows", they are probably not reffering to all science fiction shows ever produced in the U.S. But "anime" is even broader than that, because it is not a genre, it is just the output of animation produced in Japan. People use "anime" and "shonen" interchangebly it seems, but they are not.
Like, a lot of US tv shows are about cops. A lot of them. Cops, and all the myth about cops and crimes are everywhere. And when they aren't about cops, they are about the military (a lot of scie-fie is about the military). But we don't tend to think of america tv shows as a "genre." We are even willing to watch some shows that fit those tropes and acknowledge that those tropes are bad, but still like this show because of x or y. (and if you don't like american tv show, pick any genre or medium you like. Anything. I would bet 1000$ that it is the same deal in the genre you enjoy.) I'm not trying to dissmiss these justification, on the contrary I am saying that when someone say they like anime, while it is possible that they are a weebo who thinks there is no LGBTQA+ people in Japan, it is also possible that they have a complicated relationship with anime media like we all do with all media.

It can be a vague statement and could mean a lot of things. When I say I love anime I am mostly talking about some circumstances around the production of anime and what that results in. Like a lot of anime is adapted from manga and manga has a lower barrier of entry, similar to books, so you get a huge explosion in story variety and perspectives because more people can be involved at a lower cost. Not all of it is good but enough is and it means I am never bored. The voice acting industry is also pretty big and I get to listen to some pretty iconic performances. And I just like animation in general and how many different approaches there are to it. And yeah I agree that a lot of tropes are bad, but some are also good. Like where else can I see some rando find a mech in the middle of a warzone and try to pilot it.
