can end up feeling really stale, but the same is true for various calcified subgenres of sci fi. I think I'm the most interested in speculative fiction that has something that feels new to it, structurally (not just in terms of a slightly novel magic system, or the aesthetic of a different culture transplanted into a western fantasy storytelling framework), in terms of the kind of story it tells or the kind of character it follows or the kind of emotions it conveys
