i'm not really sure what to think when someone's self-identity would require me to accept metaphysical claims about the existence of things like souls. i don't want to be an asshole but i don't know how to respond if someone claims an identity that their physical body doesn't have, especially if it's a marginalized identity. i want to respect people but i also don't want to let whites people get away with saying they're transracial or whatever in an oli london type way

My general attitude is, even if I think what you're saying is bonkers. I cannot claim to know anyone better than themselves, so I just respect it and move on. If that makes them feel happy and secure with themselves, I'm not gonna try to shit on that.

Though, there's definitely some things like people who say they are "trans racial" that I feel is a bit more problematic but for the most part I think those folks are more often internet oddities than folks you're actually going to interact with on a day to day basis so I just treat them as attention seekers acting in poor faith and move on to more important things.
