i think it depends which part of the US you grew up in but apparently some people are taught that you only have to do that if you park on a noticeable slope. some people even call it the "emergency brake" instead of the parking brake

I actually did that with my first car, which had the hand lever. After that my cars had the foot pedal which is a bigger pain so I gave up on it and anyway I'm not used to there being any sort of slope out here in the midwest
