I hate to say this but I'm starting to find Twitter more hospitable than Bluesky
I think a lot of it is that once people decided Bluesky was the new Twitter they packed up and brought their toxic social behaviors over. And now the people I see on Twitter are mostly just doing their own thing in the once-mighty cultural capital of the internet.
This is nothing new. I observed something similar in 2018 when Tumblr "died" -> lots of people moved to Twitter -> Twitter got noticeably worse. It's easy to read this as some pessimistic "we are the virus" thing, but I think it's more that people's irresponsible use of social media platforms is more a reflection of the infinite-growth-and-resource-extraction mindset of the capitalists who make social media sites.
and it just makes the culture like that
people's irresponsible use of social media platforms is more a reflection of the infinite-growth-and-resource-extraction mindset of the capitalists who make social media sites
i don't think it's only the capitalists; i think it's completely reasonable to say that the tone of the community that migrated to bluesky is reflective of a lot of its userbase
like el*n and his fans might suck, but so do 1) jack, 2) a lot of tech bros that will listen to anything he says, and 3) a lot who dont deify any particular capitalist, but who will chase clout any opportunity they get, and bluesky looks like the shiny new growth-fueled spot now to dig their stakes in and establish that clout
