I know software developers love to be self-deprecating, but software development itself isn't inherently bad or stupid or pointless. I used to have that attitude to a certain degree, but I've moved away from it as I've gotten a bit older. I think that at its best, software development can involve solving interesting problems in a way that genuinely helps people.

The biggest problems with software development really come down to capitalism - enshittification pressure from VCs, absolutely ghoulish tech company leadership, lack of funding for open source projects, etc.

I think another problem is changing the perspective of craftsmanship into one of manufacture. You go to school and come out a software engineer. But the reality is that you’ll likely end up influenced by where you apprenticed/did your first jobs.

I really just want to get to the point where I have good enough work/life separation that I can do the work things at work, and then come home and spend time on all the fun side stuff that really makes me love computers.
