Yeah, it's 100% confirmed as a feature they plan on adding. It was announced at minecraft live. It's pretty neat, I'd prefer it to be more user friendly but the idea of it being an obtuse kind of a work around thing is certainly on purpose
It's in the snapshot, so the only thing stopping it is Bedrock Can't Implement It (see also: bundles, which aren't even a good adhesive medical strip for the inventory problem, but we can't even have that due to Some Reason In Bedrock)
