apparently saying 'em instead of them isn't from a contraction of "them". instead, it preserves the former 3rd person plural pronoun "hem"

"hey/hem" evolved in english to sound confusingly similar to "he/him" and ended up getting supplanted by "they/them" borrowed from old norse
