I'm pretty sure it's derivative of Eigenfunction, or perhaps Eigenvalue, both terms used pretty extensively in mathematics.
it is! for no reason that i can discern (other than "it sounds kinda cool") it has become customary to rename eigenvectors to eigenwhatevers, whenever you are working with a vector space encoding those whatevers. facial recognition research people use 'eigenfaces' enough to have spun up a wikipedia article about them
