yeah for real, this change was made for stupid reasons but i am also very glad "14 year old is terminally online and hellbent on cancelling an artist for liking tits" isn't something we need to worry about anymore
wild (derogatory) that such a feature existed in the first place
When almost every piece of info, argument or statement on numbers can be set on fire with the question "that sounds miserable, why???" Ya might wanna rethink social media
"But how can I tell if someones secretly a nazi??" I dunno look at what they say I guess like... If all they do is post cat pics but now you can't see them liking racist tweets now that just means you no longer get to poison your mind knowing that info
TOTALLY like you're telling on yourself there, you wanna be "idealogically pure" and that will open the door to the worst shit
the funniest thing is also that, a non-zero amount of people seem to use people's likes for "discovery" and it's like... bro... I get the idea of "I like this artist so if they like stuff i might like that stuff too" but it's such a backwards way of doing this.
i remember this being a huge use-case back when TweetDeck existed and had an Activity column, but I also have heard from Twitter/TweetDeck engineers about how they wish they never did that because it's almost always used for harassment/stalking 🙃
i remember people upset when likes were MADE public. i can kinda see why people will miss 'em being public (cause it feeds back into folks's algorithms and makes number go up faster) but like meh
true BUT unfortunately its still a good place for breaking news and public organizing. When that goes, I go
I remember early in cohost's users a lot of people were upset at not being able to see who people follow / are followed by because they felt that doing reconnaisance on people was an essential part of online safety. Approaching your entire online life through that kind of paranoid lens just seems deeply unhealthy to me.
Not being able to see people’s follower counts/aggregate numbers is also so good for my mental health. I’m not constantly comparing myself to others. Genius move imho.
It also REALLY promotes just like... talking to whoever you want. No one gets a "I'm too small a creator" or "I'm too big a creator" you can just like hangout. Like people.
It strips the made-up power dynamics away completely and I love that. I’ve made genuine friends here and felt much more emboldened to share and discuss ideas.
when i first started being actively social on twitter this was a genre of behavior i’d see a lot in circles near my own, and the fact that it’s not possible here is one of the reasons i’ve latched so hard onto this website lol
Softly disagree - you can always hide this information when you don't need it, but people's careless use of social networks (or even their manner of communication) can serve as an early warning system for seeing who's clearly no less than a little bonkers and you should be extra careful around. Particularly when it's about people potentially giving (or, sometimes, potentially not giving) you money for commission work.
But I think thats the issue. The fact that we sit around and go "I will not draw a cat for that person because they liked a tweet about X" is just really weird to me, not because you don't want to associate with someone but because you're using that method of filtering. We're relying on a vector of light stalking for both normal people and absolute lunatics to turn around and say "well in my specific case its good actually"
Oh, I don't mean that I won't deal with someone outright - I do various tools/game assets and people often ask if I can add something to them, which usually requires doing a quick test to give a proper estimate, but with some folks you can kind of tell that you need to charge them upfront for those 15-20 minutes or they might evaporate and you'll have one more half-finished thing lying around.
I suppose it's a bit different with art as you can usually tell whether you can draw a funny cat and make a guess on how long that should take you.
I think you might've missed my point a bit. I have no problem with you not dealing with someone outright, it's how you come to that conclusion
I can think of some slightly more specific examples, but also this thread is already two replies away from becoming a 0px div on my monitor, so I'll elaborate that my first comment was about general "data vs no data" aspect rather than pecking at anyone's likes/follows/whatnot and won't clutter here further.
in the artist-centric circles i run in, i've seen a lot of people lament the change because to them it means a loss in terms of viability for artists. i too have seen several people talk about it and are quite upset that one of their means of finding art is now taken away from them.
honestly i also completely prefer the change to be made private, but i suppose a more sane option would be to just make it toggleable so that people can adjust it to their preference.
i get frustrated though!!! i had the same experience of seeing people i know are cool getting extremely upset about it and I'm sitting there thinking to myself how old this cycle is getting. The complaining, the getting over it, and then doing it all over again every single time a new feature is implemented that makes using the site worse, or at least more stupider. There's so many different types of social circles on twitter and i feel like all of them are collectively finding something about the site that makes it worse for the way they're trying to use it. but especially for the artists on that site, its frustrating to watch them engage with twitter like its a minefield (the talk of algorithms hurting discoverability, not using the word Patreon, and other behaviors) as opposed to building some kind of community elsewhere on a site that specifically caters to artists.
the whole concept of 'everybody is already here' is just too damn compelling, i guess.
Wait, people don't just look at likes to find good shit? Like you trust someone's good taste but realize they don't wanna clog up everyone's feed with retweets so you go lookin' at their likes? People look at likes to get mad????
A good compromise would be if only I can see other people’s twitter likes. I promise to be a faithful and fair-minded custodian of everyone’s private thoughts.
