oh wow yeah never thought of that. "gi" does indeed make a "yi" sound. though, i don't think it very often does when it's at the start of a word that has more than just those two letters. the "i" sound also becomes long so even if you were to pronounce gif using the "yi" sound, it would be "yiif" and not "yiff"
