there's no light, but the sounding coming down and bouncing is analogous to sunlight. animals evolve to use a sort passive echolocation that works better during the "day".

they evolve mandibles dextrous enough to make and use tools. at this very moment, one uses a hearing trumpet to listen to the sky, wondering if anyone else is out there.
