anyway ive been doing fairly badly in chess lately, in part because i wanted to get out of my comfort zone and play a new opening as black, and lauren berlant of all people reminded me that it is a cruel optimism to let the desire to win get in the way of my desire to improve

learning another opening is a lot of fun, not just because you're playing a new style but also once you're good at it, your elo is lower than it should be so you lay into people a whole 100 points below your rightful place
