ME: Up is a film that delves into the colonial psyche and its fears. And it does so with an honesty only achievable through a lack of self-awareness.
THERAPIST: Sure.
ME: Carl imagines an animal, a storybook creature to scare Russell, a fantasy with utility for him. He connects the exoticized South America of the film into the caretaker-child relationship he has with Russell. And then it appears, and briefly he is terrified of its existence beyond what gives him power.
THERAPIST: I wonder how you would feel if we honored a different part of your subconscious today.
