deeply fascinating and rewarding post, but also i cannot help but come away from it feeling somewhat saddened. this country sacrifices so much to our highway system and for what? for lost dreams of coexistence with cars, manifested in a footbridge that no one uses anymore because no one wants to work near a highway, no one wants to build walkable areas near a highway, no one wants to live near a highway. just big scars crisscrossing the americas, bloody and trash-filled.

this article is amazing... is this a specific genre of content? Youtube videos/articles like this are sooo fascinating to me but I can never reliably find content like it... where the author does original research to try and find the answer to something just for the sake of it.

it saddened me to see someone early on in the article refer to "their side of the interstate", and later in a liner note Tyler says that communities would have developed independently because the interstate separates them. I've lived in big cities all my life and I can't imagine how isolating that must feel

lost dreams of coexistence with cars

this is the heartbreaking part for me. that period in the 50s and 60s when the interstate system was being carved out, people didn't realize how badly it was going to fuck things up (and plenty today still can't admit it), they were pragmatic and cautiously optimistic and made a point of helping the school. any time i hear "well, this technological-social change does seem to have some downsides, but it's Inevitable so let's just see how it goes and make sure our narrow interests are represented" today i think of shit like this.

Specifically with the highway system I just cannot see it as anything but a scam. What do you call it when someone sells you something based on false promises (faster, more efficient travel; peaceful coexistence; minor disruption at most to daily life)? It's a scam!! It's a fucking scam!!!
