My Asks Are Over Here

So one of my hobbies is archiving web sites, and the Czech freehost sweb.cz recently announced that it's going offline by the end of the month. That's tens of thousands of websites from the "golden era" of personal homepages 2000-2010 going down the drain. Luckily I have the know-how to preserve a significant number of them. There's a lot of gems there and I might start a separate page to showcase some, but that's not what this post is about, just a little prelude.

So a lot of these old websites have hit counters, you know the deal.

Well, a lot of these are dead, and many are written in such a way, that in Czech, without the image loading you end up simply with a sentence like "You are a visitor of this web site." Which to me is like, unexpectedly metaphysical and deep? Because like, you read the sentence, take it at face value, and only then realize there was supposed to be a counter there. Well, that's just a vibe I wanted to share.

Aside: During the making of this post, I discovered that if I named the picture hit-counter.jpg, uBlock origin would block loading it! So now it's called hyt-counter.jpg.

Jill Katze: i was recently digging through a bunch of archives of old web sites that similarly had non-working view counters and missing inline counters also lead to some fun sentences in english
Jill Katze: "people have seen this page"
Jill Katze: "you are the person to visit this page"
Jill Katze: "sailor scouts have been here since 3/24/97"
Jill Katze: truly some of the sentences ever

Totally agree, I used to have super fancy desktops when I was younger but now I just want something that's easy on the eyes when I'm working late at night, so I just go for warm, blurry ASMR visuals. I also highly recommend f.lux for night owls, it gradually makes the colors on your monitor warmer based on the time of day.

i have a folder of movie screencaps that i have slowly built over the years and lately i've just put them to shuffle and change every day. this particular image is from The Devil's Backbone and it's one of the longest lasting images from that folder.

sometimes i chose visually striking moments i remember from watching the film, but this is one of the few that i just randomly stumbled upon when i was browsing a screencap database and i fell in love with it afterwards.

(also a note on my desktop space. i generally try to keep it completely empty, but i tend to use the desktop as a visual reminder of short term things i want to do with files. that's generally how my organization works for every aspect of my life.)

My desktop is of John Mayer holding a dove from this iconic 80s-style music video.

I will not be taking questions at this time.

I also have a folder of, just, like, nice landscapes and stuff that it rotates through ever few hours. Been carrying it from install to install for like seven years.
