You are using a white uni-ball signo gel pen when it starts smudging the ink underneath it instead of writing. you scribble it on a scrap of paper. you struggle to unscrew it to check the ink level because it's kind of hard to do. it's empty. it's 3am and its empty.

i have never had a white uniball signo work for me I think its the ink ghost
I had a really bad run with them and did not understand the hype and always used gelly rolls but then one day my gelly rolls were giving me shit and the signo started working for me so I converted. I think they REALLY need to be stored tip-down though.
This seems like basic knowledge but I think you rearranged my brain with this, I have to try storing them tip down and see if I can break the curse
fwiw I think the usual wisdom for gel pens is that they're best stored on their sides to prevent leaking but i don't live that life either way, so tip down has been okay
