Gearhead shit: Full-spectrum Canon RP with Kolari IR Chrome filter. 16mm f/2.8

While the Kolari "IR Chrome" filter is far from perfect, I do enjoy that it is able to render scenes with colors as normal as this (other than the infrared). It is always a bit of a crapshoot though, especially when used on the 16mm f/2.8, because ultrawide lenses can exacerbate filter issues and also because the 16mm relies heavily on electronic corrections in order to achieve its tiny size and low price point. The results are often quite unpredictable, with some scenes looking eerily perfect and others completely breaking down, seemingly at random.

In this case, the only significant problem was severe chromatic aberration in the upper right corner which I was able to knock down a fair bit in processing. In some scenes, this effect is pervasive enough that it actually makes the photo look a bit like a red/green stereo image that you would view with old-timey 3D movie glasses.

(BTW chromatic aberration is basically the same phenomenon as infrared focus shift, where lenses focus at a different points in infrared than in visible light. CA happens when different visible spectra focus at different points. If I were rich, I would love to experiment with a bunch of "apochromatic" lenses (lenses designed to prevent chromatic aberration) to see if they have better infrared performance than normal.)
