Pipis plober
There are SO many of them! And everyone seems oblivious to their existence
Average beachgoer voice what if I walk almost directly on top of the local endangered bird and don’t even seem to notice (there was another one closer)

How do you tell this baby apart from other plovers? I'm afraid the extent of my plover knowledge is "that looks like a plover"...
Yellow legs + neck ring and black hat + orange beak with black tip on adults I guess, but also I don’t think there’s any other kind here usually so I’m pretty confident that’s who they are
There was a mated pair of plovers nesting in Montrose Beach in Chicago (named Monty and Rose, obviously), they came back three summers in a row, we loved them, moved music festivals and volleyball tournaments to avoid disturbing them, we extended the protected area so it would include their favorite nesting spot...
Monty died last year on the beach and Rose never showed up, I still get teary about it
Ahhh….. yeah… theres clearly been a lot of effort put into saving their little bit of habitat here, even if most of the people walking around have no idea. And it’s really nice to see there being more of them now.
