I’ve got two gigantic twitter Lists of artists who don’t tweet in english. I just have them in tweetdeck columns that only display posts and RTs that have images.

This setup rules; the main timeline isn't flooded with languages I can't read, and I've had a constantly-moving stream of cool art just sitting on one of my monitors for like 8+ years.

It finally stopped working today and now there just.... isn't any alternative? Sure I can follow people on pixiv but pixiv doesn't have retweets or shitposts; you can't just ambiently find new people through other artists' RTs. Tumblr and IG ban nudity so they're basically a fucking joke for art purposes. There's some reasonably popular JP mastodon instances but they're weirdly xenophobic and I don't ONLY want to follow anime artists

feels like I'm gonna just completely lose track of literally hundreds of people whose work I enjoyed

fuck man

I would definitely recommend following folks on Tumblr and Instagram as they are reasonably popular among artists and even with the issues they have they do help with the discoverability that pixiv can be lacking in (though it should be noted pixiv isn't completely without discoverability options).

With regards to Mastodon, I don't know if this is what you are referring to, but you do not need to be on an instance to follow people on that instance. Maybe you already know that and in that case apologies, but I feel like I have to point that out because for some reason that misunderstanding is extremely pervasive.

In any case, having one place for to keep up with everyone just isn't going to be a thing for a while.

you do not need to be on an instance to follow people on that instance

Except for when you do, which which happens surprisingly often lol. Of the two biggest JP artist instances, one defederates aggressively and the other does a bunch of weird shit to prevent images from federating

It's definitely an issue and TBH I kind of have mixed feelings about it.

Thing is that is a deliberate action by those instances and to some extent trying to get around that is going against the intent and existing user expectations there.

Something we'll have to grapple with at some point is with is that some of the discoverability of JP artists on Twitter wasn't entirely intended by all involved and Twitter has been a place where a lot of really unfortunate interactions with westerners have occurred, so it's somewhat understandable that JP instances of Mastodon might have tricky federation policies and I'm not sure if that is a "problem" to be "fixed".

Not that it changes the end result, but AFAIK those Japanese instances are on the receiving end of instance blocks and media federation blocks. They’re not doing it from their end. Unfortunately because of the reason for those blocks it’s really hard to find an English server that willingly federates with them that’s not for/by chuds.

This is my ONLY gripe with wanting to leave twitter - i follow hundreds of non-western artists of various languages and from what I’m seeing, many are either sticking with twitter until it goes under, or making alts on misskey and masto instances (which I have a lot of trouble navigating). SFW artists have been posting their insta accounts and many NSFW accounts have fanbox/pixiv. It feels too fragmented and inaccessible :eggbug-sob:

I don't follow a lot of JP accounts on Twitter, but I regularly do see posts get shared and they're always nice to see. Twitter's international appeal is strong and it's a shame to lose that for sure.

There's a lot rotten about Twitter but I definitely can't pretend that we wouldn't lose anything of value with its absence.
