Mac users: in case you get frustrated by modern disappearing scroll bars, the "appearance" settings in System Settings has different options you might find useful. What they mean:

  • "Automatically based on mouse or trackpad" - hides scrollbars if you're using a scrollbar, and displays if you're using a mouse
  • "When scrolling" - only shows the scrollbar if you've already started scrolling
  • "Always" - always show the scrollbars no matter what

I missed knowing where I was in a document. I missed being able to jump to a specific position with a single click (that's another option in the same control panel). And having to scroll a tiny bit to summon the scroll bars had gotten old.

It is now my policy to always have scroll bars on all the time. I recommend trying it.

did you mean "using a trackpad"?

(also I think it hides the scrollbar if you use a Magic Mouse but maybe most people don't, I don't know)
