found an ad for this in popular mechanics 1968 issue 10. said it cost $230 USD. thats $2017 today. i got it for 30 bucks, which would be about 3.50 in 1968

its the Wollensak 3M 6300. my respirator is the 3M 6300. fun lil coincidence that is making it hard to find info on the thing lol

this model came out a few years before wollensak shuttered and you can kinda tell. their other reel to reel players are (from what i can tell) real reliable hefty bois with strong all metal construction and feel like theyre built to last. this guy is almost entirely plastic. seems sturdy enough, the shitty plastic handle is still there after however many years, but this is definitely not what i think of when i think of solidly built equipment from the late 60s. this feels like a Budget Model With A Neat Gimmick In The Mechanism They Could Use To Sell It. the gimmick is it has a clutch. it has a friction disc mounted a worm gear spindle thing and it presses against a disc on either side of it depending on how its spinning. havent really been able to figure out why it does that just from the ad text, and i dont want to turn it on and figure it out rn. people are asleep and its loud as hell when its running. tomorrow

side note: i kinda wanna build a new case for the mechanism. ditch the plastic casing and build a sturdier one out of wood. the plastics all sticky and ugly and i fucking hate the fake wood look. i could do better

Oh, cool! I sort of assumed that by now the people who make all the weird old stuff super expensive would have gotten to them! I just got a semi-working ebay oscilloscope working so I can display oscilloscope music on it, which was a fun old electronics project.

theyve gotten to the high end ones, but those ones were never really cheap to begin with. and even those mostly dont go for all that much (at least in terms of high end vintage audio lol. stil quite expensive, especially if theyre well serviced). this one cost me 30 bucks and a few hours of my time driving on a beautiful day to pick it up from a quaint little house in one of the dc suburbs where the rich people with good taste and nothing to prove live tucked away in the woods. its been a good day lol
