it's appalling how much installing updates Fucking Sucks on Windows

Windows:
>Usually forced to install updates within a few days
>Download and installation takes like 30 minutes (longer if you're still using a hard drive)
>System becomes significantly slower during installation
>Usually forced to reboot to finish update, now or in the near future
>Reboot takes another 5-10 minutes (longer if you're still using a hard drive)
>Only updates Windows and some drivers
>1% chance to randomly break your install

Linux:
>Install updates whenever
>Download and installation takes like five to ten minutes
>Barely noticeable impact on performance
>Reboot whenever
>Updates like 80% of the software on your computer
>Still has a 1% chance to randomly break your install, pobody's nerfect I guess

honestly it's bizarre to me that M$ is only just now bothering to try and copy what is undoubtedly one of Linux's most useful features

M$ doesn't even offer a modern version of their OS that will receive security updates and ~nothing else for more than about a year. Even if you accept rolling updates within a major version as "long term support", that only buys you about 5 years of security updates (punctuated by catastrophic update failures).

From a "uses computers for Serious Business [we have bolted the computer to several hundred tons of steel which move around to make money]" standpoint, this is absolutely insanely painful. We're still running mainframes* in places! Expected equipment lifetime is several decades! Downtime is an annual week-long window! Windows 10 is already causing us untold quantities of pain and it's currently the extreme minority of our hosts. Coming from software, you'd hope that the OS lifecycle would be at least as good as Debian Stable (5 years of no-feature security patches, with a vague promise not to break things much), but no such luck. A bunch of Big Engineering companies are throwing money at Civil Infrastructure Linux, which is literally just Debian Stable Stable (10 years and it includes a few extra packages for industry) but adoption so far has been slow.

*Mostly due to management's exciting relationship with return-on-investment calculations, admittedly.
