I'll start: The following two statements are simultaneously true. Emo is so useless a genre label that a compelling argument can be made that bands like King Crimson and Shellac (jangly guitars and sad songs) are emo. There's also a 95% chance that if a stranger says they're, "into emo," you know EXACTLY what they mean.

pinkerton is an emo album and its wild to me that this is a controversial statement

in reply to @DianeThePunk's post:

My hot takes on Emo: Emo is a gutless parody of Goth music, with none of the emotional maturity or artistic depth, and about ten times the marketing budget. Nobody ever needed it, and there was always better music standing just to the left, waiting to be appreciated.

For every Fallout Boy polluting the airwaves there was an Interpol far more deserving of the ear-space. All the good music of that era was buried under materialistic tweenage trash, in love with the images of darkness and emotional honesty, but unwilling or unable to actually elucidate what feelings fucking feel like to any real extent. The customary pathetic power-pop sound lacked all pretenses of mood, and generally lyrics read as though they fell out of the Jr. High notebook of someone who'd heard good Goth and Post Punk music before, but didn't fucking get it.
