Here's a list of features that exist now that might not have been around last time you used the site:

  • Embedded media: when composing, links that are on their own line in posts get embedded. When viewing, users can set whether embeds should be shown to them at all (vs just links) in their settings.
  • Pinned chosts: you can pin any cohost post (chost) that you've posted. There is no limit to how many posts you can pin.
  • Search by user or #tag: the top menu has a search page that lets you find people by username or display name or search for tags to bookmark.
  • Content Warning filters: you can set up deny-list filters for content warnings in your settings page to keep posts with those warnings from being shown on your timeline
  • Lock comments: you can lock the comments on each of your chosts in the 3-dot menu after you've posted it.
  • Per-user reply or share toggling: you can temporarily opt out of replies or shares while you're looking at a given user's profile. This can help you find specific chosts by them, but it doesn't persist to your timeline settings.
  • Activation Queue is one day: you currently need only be kept from posting for one day after sign-ups. All users in waiting get activated by staff each day. (subject to change)
  • Cohost Plus! supports the creators of this website for $5 a month: it allows you to upload images up to 10MB in your chosts and you can use custom emotes of "the Host" from the logo like :host-aww::host-cry::host-evil::host-frown::host-joy::host-love::host-nervous::host-plead::host-shock::host-stare:

*edit: thanks to @eden for helping me better understand some of these!

**edit 2: shoutouts to @SilverStarsIllustration for doing the illustrations for the Host emotes. I had trouble finding the original post until today!

all i have to add/amend is that the activation queue is entirely based on current load, which means that this week has been a bit of a longer wait than normal (but even in extremely generalized terms, every new user is on track to be activated within a week, often much sooner).

i realize that this is unusual, and the benefits aren't immediately obvious... but the most important and totally invisible benefit is that there's been almost zero spam and/or bad behavior on cohost since the site launched.

thank you so much for your patience, and thanks for your interest in cohost! we're very happy you're here. :host-love:

corrections

  • embed option is whether embeds show up at all; the “allow content from [site]?” iframely clickthrough on embeds isn’t toggleable but should only show once per device per embed source (ymnv)
  • filtering is for CWs only right now, tag filtering is not done yet
  • just to clarify, the “opt-out of replies or shares” on profiles is only while looking at that profile, you can’t opt out of those in your feed like you can ‘turn off retweets’ for users on twitter
  • i don’t work here but activation time was only one day because signups were at a sustainable rate iirc, big waves of signups will probably bring that back (the purpose of which ofc is to afford reasonable moderation workload time rather than just letting it blow up at any moment)

do you think eventually that "opt-out of shares" feature could become a persisted thing per-user that would change what I see on my feed? Sometimes I want to see what a person says directly, but find they share content I'm not as interested in seeing. I really enjoy the "turn off RTs" feature from Twitter, for the same reason.

Yeah, I imagine something like that could happen, eventually! Generally, I've been pretty happy with how the 3 (+1) people making this website have prioritized their work and features and stuff, so I trust them to do a good job going forward
