With the talk of music streaming/ownership, spotify, bandcamp, etc...

How big is everyone's music libraries? I recently moved my entire collection from an old hard drive to a SATA SSD and just went past 400GB with over 80% of my library being FLAC from ripped CDs, Bandcamp downloads, qobuz purchases, OTOTOY purchases, piracy, etc.

The total size might be a little bigger than what the data shows because I also keep high res jpgs of all my album art (usually a minimum if 1000x1000, but I'll go as high as 5000x5000 if available.)

(Also gentle reminder to keep backups of you libraries!!!)

Oh that's fantastic, I didn't know foobar could give me the percentages! Almost wall-to-wall MP3's in here, biggest chunk of which is definitely video game music. (Including another batch of original sound data which I have yet to go through and convert specific games into a more listenable form.)

I'm realizing I started stashing MP3s originally via a PC with a 4GB hard drive. FOUR GB! Some of these files likely ended up on zip disks at one point just to conserve space. Probably why I never prioritized lossless early on. Never was able to distinguish a difference in quality most of the time, at least on any poor speaker setup I ever had.

I remember one interaction chatting with another user on Napster, asking why they had the Final Fantasy stuff at 48kbps. They said it saved a ton of space and was still listenable. Lmao, those poor stuffy sounding files... I have updated those items to higher quality since then.

a rough estimate is around 530GB, but some of that is different-quality dupes, or not compressed yet, etc. it's kind of a mess. i DO need to get my backups going again, thank you.

Oh right you meant "available to purchase" rather than possible to use. Yeah, idk what's going on with bandcamp but at least there's always "getting a CD and ripping it" and honestly I feel like if bandcamp dies there will be demand for a service that does the same thing so hopefully something will work out

My "source" library is 95GB—all of them are FLAC files I've gotten over the past couple years. I'm probably more likely than most to prune my library though, especially since my music taste drastically changed almost yearly until a couple years ago. I also have 18GB of AAC/m4a versions of that library which I actually use to listen to.

What do you do for backups of your library? I keep (what I like to think are) pretty good backups of my servers, but that's using tools that are more equipped to handle config files, databases, etc. Maybe they'd handle large blobs of music data, but I'm afraid to rely on that.

I don't have much for backups right now outside of using two hard drives to back up my music library every month or so. Planning to later build a NAS when my data hoarding habits turn worse.

I've got 30.9 gigs of music, mostly progressive rock but also 1980s pop, 1990s grunge rock, hip hop (Native Tongues!), and punk. I don't have TOO much video game music, but some of this stuff is worth listening to outside of the games, particularly Arika's Street Fighter EX soundtracks.

Good stuff! :eggbug:

Years back (like... over ten, pre-transition) I was hunting CDs for Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, etc.

Nowadays I kind of stopped, but wouldn't mind getting back into some progressive rock if you know any other groups.

Depends on what you like, I suppose! It's a pretty diverse genre. During the pandemic, I got turned on to Harmonium (French-Canadian and very gentle, making it good for de-stressing) and Gentle Giant (English and pretty old school. Like, Renfaire old school at points. Power and the Glory is a good starting point).

Good luck on your musical journey!

Nice collection, must be a lot of tunes for a majority of it being MP3!

48kbps... Reminds me of my years in middle and high school when I got into my first foray into piracy, and then discovering WAV files and wondering why the hard drive was getting filled up fast. :eggbug-tuesday:

Edit: Also Zip discs for backups? That's a first I've heard someone doing that, but I can see that being a thing back in the day. :eggbug-shocked:
